15. Public information and discussion sessions

In November 2002, Parliament passed the Nuclear Fuel Waste Act (NFWA). It required the major owners of used nuclear fuel in Canada to establish the NWMO. The initial phase of our mandate was to study approaches for the safe, long-term management of used nuclear fuel, and to recommend a preferred approach to the Government of Canada. The historical information about one part of that process is preserved here in line with our commitment to transparency.

Overview

NWMO is hosting community information and discussion sessions in more than 30 communities across Canada to solicit the perspective of Canadians on this important public policy issue. Over the next few months, NWMO is visiting each province and territory across Canada in order to share highlights of “Understanding the Choices”, NWMO’s second discussion document, and hear the comments of interested Canadians. Comments made by Canadians who visited and participated in each of these sessions are summarized in notes below. An overall summary report will be available following the completion of all sessions.
