Members of the Blind River and Elliot Lake Nuclear Waste Community Liaison Committees, and community members from the Township of the Northshore, Town of Spanish and the Municipality of Huron Shores recently toured the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) Oakville Proof Test Facility to learn more about Canada’s plan for the safe, long-term management of used nuclear fuel.
An extensive design, optimization and proof-testing program is underway at the NWMO facility to support the Adaptive Phased Management (APM) project for the safe management of Canada’s used nuclear fuel. Current work is focused on the engineered barriers and placement technologies, a safe and secure transportation system, and will address above and below ground design concepts.
