Based on the latest projection, at the end of the planned operation of Canada's existing nuclear reactors, the number of used fuel bundles could total up to about 5.5 million. This places the cost of the project at an estimated $26 billion (in 2020 dollars) over the approximately 175-year life cycle of the project.

The NWMO updates the cost estimate at least every five years.
