Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) recently renewed its funding agreement with the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO), continuing the organizations’ commitment to work together to ensure the responsible, sustainable management of Canada's used nuclear fuel lifecycle.
Nuclear waste owners are required to fund our work under the Nuclear Fuel Waste Act, with each owner paying their fair share of the costs associated with the long-term storage of used nuclear fuel. This funding model ensures that those benefiting from the electricity fueled by nuclear power are funding the long-term storage of the used nuclear fuel.
Funding is in place for the entire lifecycle of Canada's plan for the safe, long-term management of used nuclear fuel. This model — a strength of the nuclear sector — reflects a proactive stance towards ensuring that the ecological and safety commitments of Canada's nuclear waste management are met without compromise.
"We look forward to continuing to work with AECL as we implement Canada’s long-term plan for used nuclear fuel,” said Laurie Swami, President and CEO of the NWMO. “Canada can be proud to be among the leading countries advancing repository projects, following the safe, science-based global standard.”
Fred Dermarkar, President and CEO of AECL, shared, “Canada remains at the forefront of nuclear science and innovation, including in waste management. I am excited to continue our agreement with the NWMO. Their leadership and work will help advance the future of the Canadian nuclear sector, as it charts our path forward on safely storing used nuclear fuel to protect the health, safety and security of people and the environment for generations.”
