On March 27, the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) hosted a group of students from South Bruce to learn more about Canada’s plan for the safe, long-term management of used nuclear fuel.

“During recent community workshops held in South Bruce, participants identified youth engagement as a big priority for this multi-generational infrastructure project, so we are very pleased to be able to organize this tour specifically for our local youth,” said Cherie Leslie, Senior Engagement Advisor for the NWMO.

The NWMO is committed to engaging people across multiple generations and providing opportunities for youth in potential siting areas to become involved and informed about Canada’s plan for used nuclear fuel.

The students took part in a tour of the Bruce Power Nuclear Generating Station, the Western Waste Management Facility and the Ontario Power Generation (OPG) rock core storage facility.

“The tour was very educational, and it was exceptional to see the thought process put into the project. The most interesting part was the rock samples from OPG’s boreholes,” said Mackenzie Goetz, student from South Bruce.

The NWMO provides support to communities in their youth outreach by encouraging academic and career interests in the area. As decisions about the project and where it will be located are some years away, early capacity-building activities have a broad focus and are intended to include transferable skills that could be applied to other projects or workplaces.
