The NWMO signs new and renewed agreements with key partners.

The Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) has strengthened our network of global partnerships by signing key agreements with several international partners. The agreements were signed at the International Conference on Geological Repositories (ICGR) in Busan, Korea in May.

At the ICGR, the NWMO solidified partnerships with the United Kingdom's Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA), Finland's Posiva, South Korea's Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI), Korea Radioactive Waste Agency (KORAD) and the National Atomic Research Institute (NARI) of Taiwan. These agreements enable the sharing of knowledge, expertise and best practices related to the long-term management of used nuclear fuel.

"The NWMO is enthusiastic about continuing to work with these leading global organizations to foster international co-operation on the development and demonstration of technology, and share best practices on used nuclear fuel management," said Laurie Swami, President and CEO of the NWMO.

The NWMO's commitment to partnering with and learning from other organizations worldwide is also evident through our active participation in joint projects. These collaborations serve as a platform for fostering knowledge sharing and learning from the experiences of other countries.

Co-operation among international counterparts plays a crucial role in advancing the global development and demonstration of safe nuclear waste management methods, allowing countries to share their experiences and stay informed of developments in repository design.

These agreements follow a major co-operation agreement that the NWMO signed with the United States Department of Energy in 2023, adding to our growing list of international partners,  which includes counterparts in Belgium, France, Japan, Sweden and Switzerland.
