The Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) is asking the public to share their thoughts on our latest implementation plan, Implementing Adaptive Phased Management 2024-28.
This plan is a five-year overview of the work we intend to carry out during this period of significant transformation for the organization, as we select a site for Canada’s deep geological repository for used nuclear fuel and move into the regulatory decision-making process.
Our implementation plan is a living document that is regularly assessed and strengthened to reflect direction and guidance from communities, advances in science and technology, insights from Indigenous Knowledge, changes in societal values, and evolving public policy.
We actively seek public input to help shape our work. So, we want to hear from you. Please share your thoughts about the implementation plan through the online survey by June 7, 2024. Your voice can help shape the future of Canada’s plan for used nuclear fuel
Transparency and collaboration are two of the values that guide our work. This survey is an opportunity for us to demonstrate these values while gathering valuable input from the public, so we encourage everyone to provide their feedback.
“This will not be a decision the NWMO makes on its own,” said Laurie Swami, President and CEO of the NWMO. “Moving forward from where we are today to where we are going tomorrow will take continued collaboration.”
Once a preferred site is selected, we will take on a series of key activities, including:
- Implementing partnership agreements with host communities;
- Finalizing the safety case for the identified site;
- Beginning to construct a Centre of Expertise;
- Participating in the regulatory decision-making process; and
- Beginning to move our operations to the site.
This year, our implementation plan is published alongside the NWMO’s 2023 annual report, Creating the future together, which provides additional information about our progress in the past year.
