The NWMO’s implementation plan outlines our priorities for the next five years as we continue moving forward with our mandate for the safe, long-term management of Canada’s intermediate- and high-level radioactive waste.

The Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) is encouraging the public to share their thoughts on our Implementation plan 2025-29

This plan is a five-year overview of the work we intend to carry out during this period of significant transformation for the organization, following site selection for Canada’s deep geological repository for used nuclear fuel. We are now preparing to enter the regulatory decision-making process for this important project. We are also advancing our plan for a second deep geological repository, which will store intermediate-level and non-fuel high-level waste and potentially used nuclear fuel from new nuclear projects.

The Implementation plan 2025-29 is released alongside our Annual report 2024: Creating the future together, and together, they detail our progress and plans.

Our implementation plan is a living document that is regularly assessed and strengthened to reflect direction and guidance from communities, advances in science and technology, insights from Indigenous Knowledge, changes in societal values and evolving public policy.

We actively seek public input to help shape our work, and we want to hear from you. We encourage you to share your thoughts through our survey (open until June 6, 2025) and to help shape the future of how we protect people and the environment for generations to come.

Our commitment to listening, learning and collaborating is fundamental to the way we work. As we expand our presence in the host communities for the used fuel repository and advance plans for the second repository project, we remain focused on answering questions, listening to feedback and sharing knowledge to strengthen the safety case for our work from a social perspective.

This survey is an opportunity for us to demonstrate these values while gathering valuable input from the public. We encourage you to share your thoughts through our survey, open until June 6, 2025.
