The Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) recently strengthened our network of global partnerships by signing a new co-operation agreement with the Australian Radioactive Waste Agency (ARWA) at a ceremony in the Australian Parliament in Canberra.
The NWMO and ARWA will collaborate on a range of issues related to the safe management of radioactive waste, including the important topic of Reconciliation with Indigenous peoples. The NWMO was honored to learn from the experiences of Aboriginal Australians and Torres Strait Islanders during the visit and we look forward to a relationship of partnership and knowledge-sharing.
Bob Watts, Vice-President of Indigenous Relations and Strategic Programs at the NWMO, and Sam Usher, CEO of the Australian Radioactive Waste Agency, were hosted by the Honourable Madeleine King MP, Australian Minister for Resources, for the signing ceremony.
Co-operation among international counterparts plays an important role in advancing the global development and demonstration of safe nuclear waste management methods, allowing countries to share their experiences and stay informed of developments in repository design.
The NWMO's commitment to partnering with and learning from other organizations worldwide is also evident through our active participation in joint projects. These collaborations serve as a platform for fostering knowledge-sharing and learning from the experiences of other countries.
At the International Conference on Geological Repositories earlier this year, the NWMO solidified partnerships with the United Kingdom's Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, Finland's Posiva, South Korea's Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, Korea Radioactive Waste Agency and the National Atomic Research Institute of Taiwan.
